Is nothing sacred anymore? Well in the realm of 70’s stoner rock it never was. Dave Gutter, Trent Gay and Craig Sala of Paranoid Social Club talk about imitation as the highest form of flattery, and the impact Sabbath had on music as we know it.

Dave: “I love this tune, and for me it’s all about the lyrics. I’ve always felt that writing my own lyrics gave me some kind of gospel power in believing in what I say. So doing a cover for me has to be something I can really feel lyrically.”

Trent: “I always love hearing something familiar being kind of deconstructed and spoken in another voice. I’ve been turned on to songs before that maybe I didn’t appreciate, just by hearing somebody else’s interpretation.”

Dave: “There’s also that element of apprehension that comes with someone covering a classic song. Like “Oh No You Didn’t!” I like the audacity of covering such a legendary song. It’s one of those songs that changed rock forever.

Craig: “A lot of roots trace right back to them. Three musicians creating a sound that was powerful, ominous and innovative- and then topped off with John Osbourne’s Vocals, awesome! Any Stoner Rock fan will tell you, it’s not a flash in the pan, it’s a Religion!”

Dave: “Whose John Osbourne? Oh, he did that song ‘What if god was one of us?’ That would be a great cover too.”

Trent: “Ideally, I want hear a song given to, rather than just taken from, and I hope that’s what we did with Paranoid.”

Dave: “Actually we took the song, not gave it.”

Trent: “Dave and Jon had taken a stab at it a while back ,and Jon played it for me one night. I felt like there was something in there that we could give, and from there it started taking on it’s own life.”

Dave: “We actually began tracking this version of the song in like 2007. That’s the thing with stoner rock is it ages like fine wine. Even the newer stuff that I’ve heard bands doing is amazing. I feel like we’re kind of in the middle of a music revolution”

Craig: “Todays stoner rock bands are creating some of the only good new music that can be found these days.”

Dave: “Stone is the new Rock.”
